Replacement Arthroplasty or Joint Replacement Surgery is a procedure of orthopedic surgery in which an arthritic or dysfunctional joint surface is replaced with an orthopaedic prosthesis. Joint replacement is considered as a treatment when severe joint pain or dysfunction is not alleviated by less-invasive therapies. During the latter half of the 20th century, rheum surgery developed as a subspecialty focused on these and a few other procedures in patients with rheumatic diseases.

Spine surgery has been performed using the “open surgery” method. This procedure requires surgeons to create a 5–6-inch incision down the affected portion of the spine and to pull back the tissue and muscle using retractors to reveal the bone. Open surgery can affect anatomy more than is required to operate on the spine and can lead to lengthier recovery periods.

Spine surgery is any minimally invasive procedure that targets conditions specifically within the spine using small incisions as opposed to traditional open spine surgery which typically requires a 5–6-inch incision. This technique utilizes modern technology, advanced imaging techniques, and special medical equipment to reduce tissue trauma, bleeding, radiation exposure, hospital stays, and recovery by minimizing the size of the incision.

Limb reconstruction refers to techniques where the shape and function, or length of a bone in the arm or leg is altered, due to a problem from birth, or due to trauma.

Limb reconstruction surgery lengthens or straightens, or ‘reconstructs’ a bone or joint using an external fixator, or frame.

An external fixator is attached to the bone by screws and wires. By adjusting the frame, the limb can be lengthened and/or straightened, joint deformity corrected and bone that is missing, infected or abnormally formed be replaced.

Sports medicine, also known as sport and exercise medicine (SEM), is a branch of medicine that deals with physical fitness and the treatment and prevention of injuries related to sports and exercise. Although most sports teams have employed team physicians for many years, it is only since the late 20th century that sports medicine has appeared as a distinct field of health care.

Physical therapy (PT), also known as physiotherapy, is a physical medicine and rehabilitation specialty that, by using mechanical force and movements, remediates impairments and promotes mobility, function, and quality of life through examination, diagnosis, prognosis, and physical intervention. It is performed by physical therapists (known as physiotherapists in many countries).

In addition to clinical practice, other activities encompassed in the physical therapy profession include research, education, consultation, and administration. Physical therapy services may be provided alongside, or in conjunction with, other medical services.
